We believe that exciting ideas for groundbreaking space-based R&D are out there, and we want to make these ideas come to life. The ISS National Lab mission is to fully utilize the ISS National Lab, enabling cutting-edge research on station from every corner of the country. When responding to formal solicitations, follow the instructions contained in that solicitation. For all other proposal submissions, below is an outline of our submission process.
The ISS National Lab works with investigators to develop project ideas and subsequent proposals. Submitted proposals are then evaluated on a regular basis for scientific, technical, and economic/commercial merit and anticipated downstream impact. The ISS National Lab has specific proposal development instructions and evaluation criteria that are available upon request by completing the form on this page. Upon requesting a copy of these guidelines, an ISS National Lab team member will contact you to discuss your project idea(s). Conversations with the ISS National Lab staff will address many potential problems in advance, especially those regarding feasibility and compliance with flight requirements and capabilities. It is imperative that you speak with an ISS National Lab team member prior to submitting a proposal to ensure your concept has the best chance of being selected.
The ISS National Lab proposal evaluation includes assessment of:
- Scientific and technical merit, to justify the use of the space station as a research platform.
- Operational feasibility, to ensure the project can be conducted safely and effectively on station.
- Funding commitments and requests, to ensure the project can be completed with defined resources.
- Potential economic and commercial impact, to assess resulting value to the American taxpayer.
If you have not yet secured funding for your proposed project, please note that proposals receiving high evaluation scores may qualify for funding or in-kind support assistance from our venture capitalist connections, implementation partners, or an ISS National Lab grant.
While our proposal submission and evaluation processes are streamlined, we do have specific requirements that must be met. For a copy of our proposal instruction document, please initiate contact with the ISS National Lab to begin a conversation about your potential ISS National Lab project by filling out the form on this page.
The ISS National Lab will not consider proposals received from a non-U.S. person as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)
A representative list of mandatory flow down provisions contained in the agreement can be accessed via the ISS National Lab’s Contracts and Compliance webpage.
